Apostrophe - the sign ('), as used: to indicate the omission of one or more letters in a word, whether unpronounced, as in o'er for over, or pronounced, as in gov't for government; to indicate the possessive case, as in man's; or to indicate plurals of abbreviations and symbols, as in several M.D.'s, 3's.

personification - the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, esp. as a rhetorical figure. the representation of a thing or abstraction in the form of a person, as in art.

Synesthesia - a sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another modality, as when the hearing of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color.

Hyperbole - A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect.

Understatement - to state or represent less strongly or strikingly than the facts would bear out; set forth in restrained, moderate, or weak terms

Litotes - A figure of speech consisting of an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite

Metonymy - A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated

Synecdoche - a figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for a part, the special for the general or the general for the special

Paradox - a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.

Oxymoron - A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined

Allusion - a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication

Metaphor - a form of expression (not using `like' or `as')in which a quality or characteristic is given to a person or thing by using a name, image, adjective etc normally used of something else which has similar qualities etc

Simile - a figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between things of different kinds (usually formed with 'like' or 'as')

Implied Metaphor - A less direct metaphor.

analogy - a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based
